Former Director of Publications of United Student Movement (USM) 2018-2019 regime, Quinell Ming advised that Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU) students must become comfortable with a strong media presence on the campus, specifically The Hilltop Trumpet.

In an interview with Hilltop Trumpet Journalist, Ming expressed the importance of a functioning university newspaper and why the university’s students must get accustomed to its presence. “The Hilltop Trumpet is responsible for keeping people in check which includes both our university admin and student leaders” said Ming.

When asked if his advice came as a result of public expression of discomfort from the student body, Ming said discomfort comes when students see themselves as the focus of a freshly posted article which highlights something that he or she has done, “While it is never the journalist intention to tarnish the character of anyone, we are ‘watch dogs’ and persons must be kept in check” Ming added.

Though reporting on various entertainment and sporting events are within the scope of the Hilltop Trumpet’s coverage, Ming wants the school population to know that the publication will not shy away from covering more serious subjects. “One of our main focus as student Journalists surrounds our student leaders and Administration. Club Executives must be reminded that they cannot apply for a position just to wear the uniform and look nice, leaders must lead effectively and as journalists for the trumpet we must ensure that it is done” said Ming.

During Ming’s tenure as Director of Publications for the United Student Movement (USM) 2018-2019 regime his aim was to revive a publication that has been completely dormant prior to his appointment. He stated that with the help of an efficient team including the current for Director of Publications of United Student Movement (USM) Chantelle Rochester he was able to raise the Hilltop Trumpet to a level where it can be recognized and respected.
