Jodi leads NCU to victory over GC

Northern Caribbean University’s Female Football Club (NCU FFC), came out victorious in a hard fought match of football against a dynamic GC foster team.

The semi-packed stands of the NCU Oval came alive as Jodi-ann Wright (Jodi) steered the home side to a 2-1 win against the visitors yesterday.

GC Foster has a reputation for being one of the best teams in the intercoll tournament and being the reigning champions they were expected to be a tough match for the girls from Mandeville.

However, in the 30th minute, Jodi held off her defender and took a thundering shot from about 25 yards to register the first goal of the match and gave NCU the lead.

Jodi-ann scored again 25 minutes into the second half after continuous attacking plays from NCU landed them a free kick opportunity from around the same 25 yards distance. The GC keeper was left at a standstill as a precise kick from the number 10 sent the ball flying into the right side of the goal.

“Before the game all that was in my head was, we need the first goal. If we scored first I knew my teammates would believe in themselves a little more, said Jodi-ann. She also said that the captain and goalkeeper, Jossent Mckie gave the team a motivational talk before they went on the field and they delivered based on the energy felt before the game.

GC managed to score late in the second half but great defensive plays by Mlileak Stone prevented them from scoring another and secured the win for the team.

When asked to comment on the match, head coach of GC foster Nicholas Wilson, said “It was very competitive from start to finish …we didn’t take our chances. The limited opportunities that NCU had were taken well.”

NCU’s head coach, Fabian Summerville, told the Trumpet that he was very proud of the way the girls played, he liked the way the team kept the pace against a very good attacking GC Foster team. However, he mentioned that the team needs to better their first touch and ball control.

NCU prepares to host the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Friday in another intercoll match-up
