On Friday October 4, 2019 the United Students Movement (USM) hosted its’ first workshop for the year with the 2019/20 regime. This was planned by Director of Publications (USM), Chantelle Rochester.

The workshop was held because of the need to develop a cadre of amateur media practitioners that would produce professional work. “Some of my writers aren’t communication students and haven’t written anything before, hence, the workshop would be ideal for them so they could get a basic understanding of how to structure a news story, how to do research for a story and how to submit a story,” Rochester said at the workshop last week.

The workshop was carefully planned to include all aspects of the content team. The presenters selected were professionals within the fields of journalism and photography. The highlights of the workshop included; rap sessions where the main group was split based on position whether a journalist or photographer.

The photography and videography session was chaired by Mr. Brian Cuff who is well experienced in the field of photography; he shared his experiences in the field and showed the audience how to handle similar experiences. While the Journalistic aspect was chaired by Freelance Journalist, Lecturer and Adviser to DOP Rochester Miss. Lawrie Henry, who took the care of journalist from research to writing a news article.

The session was engaging and the participants did numerous activities. At the end of the day when asked she said from her view the general goals of the workshop was met, however she wouldn’t know if the participants applied what was learnt until they submitted work.
