NCU LOOKS TO BEGIN INFO SCIENCE DIPLOMA IN 2019

The Department of Computer Information Sciences (CIS) of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) is set to go ahead with plans of implementing a Diploma in Information Technology this year.

The CIS department currently offers four degree programmes: A Bachelor of Science (BSC) in Computer Science, BSC in Computer Information Systems, BSC in Information Technology and the Associate degree (AS) in Information Technology, while also looking forward to launching a Diploma in Information Technology as of the next school semester during Module One.

Chair of the department, Damion Mitchell, says the diploma is offered to students who want to pursue a degree in Computer Sciences but cannot be enrolled because they are not qualified enough, having scored only three or four CSEC passes but still desiring certification or recognition in the Information Technology domain. He also made mention of the existing thrust in Manchester in the Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) sector which has helped to influence their decision to package some of their courses to offer the diploma to train more individuals.

The programme which is priced at a competitive rate, according to Mitchell, is scheduled to offer courses in the evenings from 5 pm to 8 pm, for two days of the school week. The programme which has a year-long duration contains six courses and holds a matriculation requirement of three CSEC subjects.

Instructor for the CIS department, Henry Osbourne agreed that course is at a competitive price adding, “Not many institutions offer such a diploma and the key thing aligned directly with ours is its industry certifications. The completion of each course grants students a permit to sit the certification exam which then grants them the opportunity to work in the field while simultaneously studying.”

The CIS department expresses a level of excitement on the new launch and passionately reaches out to interested individuals using various media inclusive of the Observer Newspaper, Mandeville weekly, NCU radio and Social media platforms. A Diploma in Information Technology will allow participants to acquire job spaces in Network Administration, System Administration, PC repairs, General systems administrations and Technology Management.
